A SADC wide professional
development project to enhance competence of teachers in the
SADC region for integrating ICT in pedagogically meaningful
ways in schools and educational institutions. The project
is based on the idea of networking local teacher groups set
up to serve as so-called change laboratories for developing
the professional competence of teachers to utilise ICT in
their profession. The workshop is arranged to facilitate planning
similar change laboratories to be set up and linked with each
other into a teacher support network with VCILT as a support
hub in the University of Mauritius.

ICOOL 2003
in December 2003, the VCILT organized the first International
Conference on Open and Online Learning (ICOOL 2003), first
of its kind in the region, with the support of the Hewlett
Foundation. In line with UNESCO ongoing efforts to bridge
the gap between information rich and poor countries and thus
contribute to social changes and improvements, ICOOL served
as a multi-disciplinary forum for discussion and reflection
on activities and projects related to technology-enhanced
learning, with a particular emphasis on the quality and availability
of education. 150 researchers and practitioners from 19 countries
participated actively in contributing to put Mauritius on
the map, as a pioneering provider of new approaches and partnerships
for CMCP and TEE in the indian ocean region.

RESEARCH WEEK
Research Week 2007 is a novel
initiative of the University of Mauritius to promote Research
& Development activities related to national development
and to create an innovation culture crucial for the future
economic success of the country.

& Innovations Challenges’, reflects the unflinching
desire to provide an interactive platform for the wider research
community for the dissemination of research findings to relevant

WITFOR
WITFOR 2005
WITFOR 2005 Education Commission Project to enhance ICT competence
of teachers in developing countries; the rationale for the
WITFOR Education commission work is to mobilise avant-garde
SADC region teachers and teacher educators to become change
agents in improving the professional competence of the teacher
communities, the quality of teaching and the learning environments
of their students and themselves through a SADC-wide professional
development project. The project aims at establishing a SADC-wide
teacher support network and enhancing professional development
of secondary school teachers and teacher educators through
the network of so-called change laboratories.

WITFOR 2007: ICT FOR DEVELOPMENT AND PROSPERITY
Recognizing the developmental opportunities
offered by digital technologies and the need for developing
countries and developed countries to collaborate to exploit
such opportunities, the World Information Technology Forum
(WITFOR) 2007 is organized by the International Federation
for Information Processing (IFIP) and hosted by the Federal
Government of Ethiopia, in cooperation with the Ethiopian
ICT Development Agency (EICTDA), the Ethiopian Information
Technology Professional Association (EITPA) and the United
Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).

BOOT CAMP
The first Bootcamp was held in Mauritius
in August 2006. Course-writers from 13 participating countries
Barbados, Belize, Botswana, Malta, Mauritius, Namibia, Samoa,
Seychelles, St Kitts and Nevis, St Vincent and the Grenadines,
Swaziland, Tonga and Vanuatu convened to start writing on
two topics: Entrepreneurship and Tourism. The starting point
for creating these Open Educational Resources (OERs) was existing
available course content which will be made available via
the Internet. While the first project involves the development
of learning content in entrepreneurship and tourism, a list
of priority areas has been agreed. The Second Bootcamp will
be held in Singapore (12-30 March 2007) with 24 countries
participating. This second Bootcamp will have course writers
in the field of professional development of educators convene
and contribute to building of more OERs on the Wikieducator.

OTHERS
Society for Free Radical Research
The Society for Free Radical Research has
its headquarters at the University of Mauritius. Following
the formal adoption of SFRR-Africa as the fifth regional wing
of the Society for Free Radical Research International in
Kyoto ( in year 2000), SFRR-Africa held its 2nd International
Conference at the University of Mauritius. The 3rd Annual
Meeting was held in October 2002 in South Africa, the 4th
International conference in Zimbabwe in October 2003, the
5th International conference in St Lucia in July 2004 and
the 6th International conference in Morrocco in September
2005. We are looking forward to organising the 7th International
conference in Mauritius in July 2007...
