4.5 Gender Socialisation

As mentioned earlier, most sociologists view culture as the key to gender. Simone de Beauvoir said that "Men and women are not born, we are created and we create ourselves." This implies that gender, like other cultural values, norms and practices, is acquired through the process of socialisation. Socialisation is a complex process and a life-long one. We never stop learning through social experiences and sociologists have identified a number of settings that are of particular relevance to the socialisation process. These are referred to as ‘agents of socialisation'. The different agents of socialisation are the family, the school, the peer group, the mass media and the religious institutions.
